Attack of the 50-Foot French Onion

I love soup, and I love bread, and I hate washing dishes. Ergo, there is little I like more than soup in a bread bowl, especially French Onion soup. It’s hearty, and homey, and covered in bubbling cheese.  The First Mate is also particularly fond. He loves the idea of communal food– gathering to eat around one dish brings people together and is more symbolic of fellowship and interdependence. Thus he pitched what was surely one of the best ideas ever: Why limit ourselves to individual bread bowls? And so was born the bread tureen.

Below that melty provolone exterior lurks homemade french onion soup. It was not complex, but it was a bit time-consuming. We made the soup the night before, then carved the bowl, added the soup, and melted the cheese right before dinner. It was delectable. Continue reading
